Is this complicated? Since over 80% of Jews declare Israel important of their identity, the call to isolate them is antisemitism. Her claimed Jewish background is interesting but no more than that. Her words are not criticism of a foreign government but of an American minority group. Nasty stuff. Nasty woman. It's been amazing to watch how these symptoms of pathology have emerged over the last year in American academic institutions.
Sadly, I see it every day, including at my own institution. In your view, what is the cause of this desire to distance oneself from Jewish history? One does not need to see Israel as central to their identity in order to be respectful of its choice and sovereignty, does one? Perhaps it's simply a matter of being better informed. It would be an exaggeration for me to claim that my identity is connected to Israel, a place I have never stepped my foot in.
It is because of woke DEI ideology that has seen anything that happens in the Middle East through the narrative of oppressor vs oppressed, colonialism vs indigenous people, etc etc. Highly charged linguistics, where people’s personal grievances play a role as well as once again having a collective scapegoat. I have been applying for permanent jobs after a long time as freelancers and the woke ideology and incessant repetition of ideology and normalization of transgenderism is doing a numbers on people. As a white, middle-class person don’t try and apply for a job these days no matter how qualified. You will be tossed aside like a garbage bag in favor of mediocre people with right skin tone, “right” ideology - Palestine! - who scream the loudest and use the most verbal insults so that their narcissistic little self is finally recognized. It has nothing to do with reality. Any person with half a brain will critically ask why Israel is constantly delegitimised on the global arena whilst true colonies like Australia or Canada have never been questioned in their existence. Not once. It’s mental madness become real.
But Israel is not just a place. Israel is us and we are Israel. These types of Jews bother me deeply. Ever since I was a kid and read the “Old Testament” as a kid I felt a inner pull towards Jews, the land of Israel, and HaShem/Judaism. It took me till my late 30’s to do an Orthodox Conversion but I’m here am. Married, learning to be a Rabbi, and taking care of my family. So when I see Jews refusing to acknowledge their true inner soul desire of divine connection, it really irks me. BUT they’re still Jews and I still love them or am supposed to love them I should say. It’s a struggle for me and that’s why I am study the Maamer of the Chabad Rebbe Rashab called Heichaltzu, A treatise on Ahavas Yisroel. Because I have anger and I want to internalize that love for my fellow Jews, especially the Jews who hate themselves and us.
I understand and yet I don’t. I am a secular Jew. I am with other Jews regardless where they live. I have no desire for what you call divine connection, am I irking you?
Negative. You are not irking me. I meant those who do what this prof did or the “ultra-orthodox” yidden that join the Palestinian protests calling for death of their fellow Jews. That’s sickening.
I have no sympathy. She wanted to ban Jews who were proud of being Jewish. Turns out Karma is a bitch. Hope she loses. She can go teach at Tehran U.
